Assistant Principal

Assistant Principal Leigh Whiting-Jones joined the Blanchard community in 2018 after six years as a classroom teacher in first and fifth grades, respectively. As a teacher, she partnered with families to instill in children skills ranging from multiplication to observational drawing, and public speaking to computer programming. She fostered professional learning communities committed to continuous improvement, supported by the data inquiry cycle. She led her school’s social emotional learning initiatives and worked to engage educators in courageous conversations about race and equity.

As Assistant Principal, Leigh is committed to building strong relationships with students, staff, and families. In her role, she delivers pencils to children on their birthdays, plays any willing opponent at chess, leads mindfulness mini lessons, and sometimes dons a rainbow wig. She also develops operational systems to maximize transparency and streamline communication, analyzes school wide data trends, and supports teachers to use Universal Design for Learning and Backwards Design practices to develop culturally-inclusive, rigorous lesson and unit plans. She partners with the leadership team to communicate with families and create opportunities for home-school collaboration.

Leigh’s approach to discipline is rooted in restorative practices, holding relationships at the center of conversations about student behavior. She is committed to building inclusive learning environments where all children can be seen, known, and find success.

When she is not learning alongside students, staff, and families at Blanchard, Leigh enjoys spending as much time outdoors as possible. She can often be found running the dirt roads in Western Mass, strumming her guitar, or reading a good book in the sunshine.
